Patient receives a pig heart in the world's first successful transplant of its kind in the US
ブタの心臓を人体に移植 米で世界初の成功
The US University of Maryland announced on the 10th that it had successfully carried out a transplant operation on an American man using a heart from a pig that was genetically modified to prevent rejection by the human body. This is the first time in the world that a human has received a heart transplant using a pig. As organ shortages have become a serious problem in the US, hope is growing for pig organ transplants.
The person who received the transplant on the 7th is a 57-year-old man living in Maryland who had been suffering from serious heart disease. The surgery lasted eight hours, but he is reportedly doing well. The doctor who performed the surgery said, "It's working and it looks normal, but we don't know what tomorrow will bring us," and plans to keep an eye on the patient's progress.
Eiji Kobayashi, a project professor at the Jikei University School of Medicine (transplantation and regenerative medicine), said, "This is a watershed event. Having a vital organ such as the heart transplanted from a pig with the patient surviving for at least a few days is of great medical significance."
