Mizuho to invest in Filipino digital bank

Mizuho Bank will invest in Tonik Financial, which operates digital banking in the Philippines. It will acquire an about 10% stake in Tonik for roughly 7 billion yen. Japan's three mega banks aim to share the fruits of economic growth in Asia, where the population is growing, by investing in the digital finance field.
The strength of Tonik Financial, based in Singapore, lies in its low-cost business model of building a system in the cloud that requires no brick-and-mortar branches. The company is the first private bank to enter digital banking in the Philippines. Within six months of its opening in March 2021, it had reached over 100,000 accounts.
Mizuho will tap into growth in the Philippines, mainly in personal loans, by investing in the digital bank. It is also considering dispatching Mizuho personnel to acquire know-how related to the digitization of financial services.
