* hope against hope: (that以下）に一縷の望みをかける
・A: Do you think Sam will be able to get the contract? サムは契約とれるかな？
B: Not a hope. 見込みは全くないね。
*Not a hope:見込みはまったくない（カジュアルな表現）
・Sally says she's interested in coming to the seminar, so that's a hopeful sign. サリーはセミナー出席に興味を示しているので、期待が持てます。
*a hopeful sign :良い兆候、有望な。人や兆候がうまくいきそうなことを表します。
・I don't want to raise false hopes, but I have a meeting with ABC next week. 変な期待は持たせたくないんだけど、来週ABC社と打ち合わせがあるんだよね。
*to raise false hopes：あらぬ期待を抱かせる、ぬか喜びをさせる
・A: Are you ready to give up hope? もう諦めるつもり？
B: No, there's still a chance we can get a deal. いや、まだ取引チャンスはある。
*give up hope: 望みを捨てる、諦める。neverを使って、We never gave up hope. （私たちは決してあきらめなかった）のようにも使います。
・I hope to hell that Henry comes on time today. 今日こそヘンリーが時間通りに来ることを強く願うよ。
*hope to hell: 強く願う。hellはカジュアルな表現で「強調」として使われることがしばしばあります。
・I'm afraid there's little hope of the economy recovering soon. 経済がすぐに回復するという希望はほとんどないだろう。
*there is little hope of:...: ～は望み薄である、～の望みはほぼない
・A: Did you really win the lottery? 宝くじに当たったって本当？
B: Cross my heart and hope to die. 神に誓うよ。（そうだよ）
* cross one's heart and hope to die: 「胸に十字を切る、死んでもいいよ」が直訳。話し言葉で「嘘じゃないよ」「本当だよ」という意味で使います。
